Healing through Grief: A Journey of Hope

6/2/2025

Grief is an inevitable part of the human experience, a journey marked by profound loss and the accompanying emotions that can feel overwhelming. Whether it's the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or any significant life change, grief can cast a shadow over every aspect of our lives. However, amidst the darkness, there is also the potential for healing and growth. Understanding the mourning process and learning healthy coping mechanisms are essential steps toward navigating grief and finding a path toward healing.

Understanding the Mourning Process: Grief is a deeply personal experience, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to coping with it. However, psychologists have identified common stages that many people go through during the mourning process. These stages, popularized by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. It's important to note that these stages may not occur in a linear fashion, and individuals may move back and forth between them.

Denial is often the first stage, where the mind struggles to accept the reality of the loss. This is followed by anger, as the individual grapples with feelings of injustice or frustration. Bargaining involves seeking a way to undo the loss or make sense of it, while depression can set in as the full weight of the grief is felt. Finally, acceptance is reached when the individual begins to come to terms with the reality of the loss and integrate it into their life.

Coping Strategies for Healing
While grief may feel all-encompassing, there are strategies that can help individuals cope with their emotions and begin the healing process:

Allow Yourself to Feel
It's natural to want to push away painful emotions, but allowing yourself to feel them is an important part of the healing process. Give yourself permission to experience sadness, anger, and any other emotions that arise.

Seek Support
Surround yourself with supportive friends and family members  who can offer comfort and understanding. Joining a support group or seeking the guidance of a therapist can also provide valuable support during this time.

Practice Self-Care
Grief can take a toll on both the mind and body, so it's essential to prioritize self-care. Make time for activities that bring you comfort and relaxation, whether it's spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in creative outlets.

Honour Your Loved One
Find meaningful ways to honor the memory of your loved one, whether it's through creating a tribute, participating in a memorial service, or carrying on their legacy through acts of kindness.

Give Yourself Time
Healing from grief is a gradual process, and it's important to be patient with yourself. Allow yourself the time and space you need to grieve, and know that healing doesn't happen overnight.

Find Meaning
As you navigate the mourning process, seek to find meaning in the experience. Reflect on the lessons learned, the love shared, and the ways in which the loss has shaped you.

Coping with grief and loss is a deeply personal journey, but it's one that no one has to face alone. By understanding the mourning process and learning healthy coping strategies, individuals can begin to navigate their grief and find a path toward healing. While the pain of loss may never fully disappear, it is possible to find moments of peace, acceptance, and even growth along the way. Remember, healing takes time, but with patience, support, and self-care, it is within reach.

SARA FOR WOMEN IGNITING HOPE: 50 YEARS OF STRENGTH & RESILIENCE

This milestone event celebrated five decades of empowering women and providing refuge, support, and advocacy.
SARA for Women is a non-profit that has spent 50 years evolving from its grassroots beginnings as FRONYA, founded in 1975 by Sharon Syrette and Lynne Duncan around a kitchen table. Throughout this journey, it has continuously provided free, life-changing services—including emergency shelters, second-stage housing, outreach, and counselling—to support women and their children in the Fraser Valley as they reclaim their lives from abuse, trauma, and inequality.

SARA For Women has a goal to raise $50,000 this summer to support women and children fleeing violence. To contribute, visit https://tinyurl.com/SARA-For-Women-Ignite-Hope
