The beginning of September and the fall season brings a lot of attention to the phrase “Back to”. Back to School, Back to Routine etc. Instead of framing this as going back to past routines, take this opportunity to embrace a new fitness routine. Add something new that gets you excited. Small changes that you add in now will help to power you through the shorter days of the Fall and Winter season.
Some easy Fall ideas to add to your week:
It takes time to build a new routine so keep trying new things until you find something that you want to do on a regular basis. For some of us, friends help to keep us accountable and make it easier to maintain a routine. For others, the quiet alone time is what will keep you coming back. Either way, it’s important to find joy in getting active. No matter what it looks like for you, seize the opportunity to add more movement and mindfulness to your Fall schedule! I can't recall the last time a book made me burst into laughter so frequently that I ended up spitting out my coffee. The Crazy Life & Times of Jack "Rat" Fink is an exhilarating tale that chronicles the mind-blowing exploits and escapades of Jackson "Rat" Fink and Antoine "Juice" Hawkins. These best friends, who have been inseparable since preschool, find themselves embarking on thrilling adventures in 1980s Seattle. Their shared thrill-seeking nature often leads them into trouble with their parents and, eventually, with the law. While this story may not be suitable for young or sensitive readers, you will undoubtedly find yourself laughing along with Rat and Juice on their extraordinary journeys. This book is Jerry's follow up to his also hilarious Memoir of a Hockey Nobody. Jerry was born in Burnaby. He grew up with 4 sisters. Like many Canadian youth with an NHL dream, he spent hours playing street hockey with friends. He loved many sports, but his true passion was being a hockey goalie. When he graduated high school in 1979, he didn’t think to pursue a college or university education. He ended up in Mission with his wife and daughter with no plans to ever write a book. After his friends encouraged him to share his gift of story-telling, he wrote his first book, Memoir of a Hockey Nobody, the #1 hockey book on Amazon.ca. He says "This writing thing just kind of snuck up on me later in life and I am really enjoying it.” Stan "The Hockey Maven" Fischler (author of over 100 books) said, "I loved it so much I finished it on Sunday and started reading it again on Monday!" Jerry is starting a podcast in September called, "Hockey, Books, & Storytellers with Teabag & Tone" with his friend Craig "C-Tone" Reidy. When asked about the possibility of another novel or sequel, he reveals that he is currently developing a detective/murder mystery with a supernatural twist. The work is taking shape, with the working title 'Friday Mike'. For a good time, you have to pick up a copy of The Crazy Life & Times of Jack "Rat" Fink. Every year, Mission Community Services hosts special fundraising events that support our work serving the community. This year we are excited to share with you our upcoming fundraiser, the first of its kind in Mission. We will be providing 10 community members with an immersive experience of homelessness. They will experience something that most of us, hopefully, will never have to live, as a way to raise awareness and funds for the new community Medical Mobile Unit (MMU). By taking up the challenge of spending 24 hours un-housed participants are demonstrating their commitment to making a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable. The ongoing need to find shelter, safety, and food becomes a priority and often supersedes the need for health care. Most acute care for this population is provided in the emergency department, which is more expensive and more fragmented than regular care provided by a primary provider. HOW YOUR FUNDING HELPS! The funds raised from 24-hour un-housed will go towards keeping Mission’s new community Medical Mobile Unit– “MISSION IN MOTION” on the road to serve our community’s marginalized Individuals. The MMU with be equipped with medical supplies, a nurse practitioner-physician collaborative to offer basic medical care and social support to the un-housed, vulnerable Seniors, Youth and new Canadians to Mission. Our overall goal is to help solve homelessness, raise awareness, support emergency services, and attain funding for the community Medical Mobile Unit (MMU). Each participant will be collecting funds for the 24 Hr. Homeless fundraiser through a pledge drive, with the goal of raising $25,000. Continued support from the community will be essential in ensuring a positive campaign. We can’t do it without your help! DONATIONS PLEDGES ARE BEING ACCEPTED BY: 1. Clicking “Donate Now “on participant’s bio: https://tinyurl.com/4622ybjm 2. MCSS donation page: https://missioncommunityservices.com/donate 3. In person at MCSS’s main office - 33179 2nd Avenue, Mission. V2V 1J9 Participants will begin their experience at Mission Community Services Shelter, this is where they will sleep during the 24-hour period. They will be expected to face some of the same challenges that un-housed people encounter every day by undertaking tasks assigned to them by a case worker, (as is the case with un-housed people) for a true immersive experience.
