For every woman who has ever journeyed to find themselves, we emerge in a place like the understory; those layers within a forest between the soil and the sky. It may be difficult to reach the light in this place. What lies here can either give us strength or devour us. -Cora Buchanan ![]() This story follows Cora Brochan's journey as she attempts to recall events from her childhood. Set in the Fraser Valley, I found myself immersed in the familiar landscape of my own backyard. The suppressed and haunting secret buried in Cora's past unlocks the path to her future. As a mother and wife myself, I find the struggles that Cora lives through to be relatable and real. Upon finishing "What Lies in the Understory," I was left with the sense that this is not the end. Not only did I desire more, but I also felt that this sparked the beginning of my journey. It has pushed me to explore my “understory” and empowered me to dig deep within myself – my triggers, my emotions, my joys. Elizabeth Maenpaa is not only a lifelong learner, but also a lifelong writer. She discovered her passion for writing at an early age. It was a creative writing course that officially ignited the inception of her first novella, "What Lies in the Understory." It is a work of fiction and imagination, but you cannot help but see glimpses of Elizabeth’s experiences and her memory of the story of the Wild Woman of the Woods, a supernatural being, in her work. She attributes her writing career inspiration to Lee Maracle, an Indigenous Canadian writer and academic from the Stó꞉lō nation, as well as to Andrea MacPherson, a Canadian poet and writer. Elizabeth grew up in Port Hardy and planted her roots here in Mission in 2002. She has a degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of the Fraser Valley with additional courses in Creative Writing, Literary Journalism, Indigenous literature, and a Bachelor of Education from Vancouver Island University. Currently, she fosters her love for writing as a middle school English teacher in Mission. This may be Elizabeth’s first published work of fiction, but it certainly won’t be her last. "What Lies in the Understory" is available for purchase at Totally BOOK-ish at The Junction and on Amazon.ca. Attendees celebrated women overcoming adversity to create a better future for their families at Soroptimist International of Abbotsford-Mission’s Live Your Dream Awards at the Fraser River Interpretive Centre in Mission, BC on Saturday, April 22.
Six BC women, the primary supporters for their households, received a combined $9,500 to pursue their educational goals. Three winners shared their stories on Saturday; stories that included dreams of becoming a joiner, journalist, and nurse. Previous award winners have graduated with degrees in education, nursing, and social work. Winners are determined by a panel of judges who assist club members in determining fund distribution. This year’s judges included a former recipient of the Live Your Dream award, alongside What’s On! Mission’s owner and publisher, Ellen Nguyen. Each year, Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) gives away over $2.8 million for the Live Your Dream Awards as a part of its mission to provide women and girls with the training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Winners not only receive financial support, but the backing of a global organization believing in them and encouraging them to reach for their dreams. “Evidence shows that a quality education – more than anything else – holds the greatest potential to transform the lives of women and girls,” said Colleen Schmidt, member of the Abbotsford-Mission club. “Our Live Your Dream Awards address a common need around the world and here in our own community. They quite literally make dreams come true.” The Abbotsford-Mission club also gave away an additional $28,000 total to their 10 community partner organizations: Abbotsford Youth Commission, Archway Community Services, Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association, Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, Lifetime Learning Centre, Mission Community Services, Mission Hospice, Peardonville House, Salvation Army and SARA for Women. Supporting community organizations, both financially and through volunteering efforts, is part of the club’s commitment to empowering women to achieve their dreams. Nominations for the Live Your Dream Awards open on August 1 and close on November 15. Awards are typically presented in the following April. More information about the awards are available on the SIA website: https://www.soroptimist.org/our-work/live-your-dream-awards/apply-for-the-live-your-dream-awards.html Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) hosted the 2nd Annual Healthcare Heroes Slo-Pitch Tournament on August 12 & 13 at Exhibition Park in Abbotsford where teams battled the sweltering heat and dust.
