![]() This past summer, the Alfano family set out for their family fishing trip to Loon Lake. Little did they know that a life-altering event would unfold. John Alfano, accompanied by his wife Sandra, drove in their convertible, while their son and his girlfriend, Steven and Sydney, followed in her SUV, loaded with all their camping equipment. As they traveled along Highway 1, about 85 km outside of Cache Creek, a loud collision shook them to the core. When they looked back in their rear-view mirror, they saw a vehicle flipping through the air and landing on its roof. Their hearts sank as they realized that it was their son and girlfriend’s car. Expecting the worst, they turned around. As they pulled up to the wreckage, Steven and Sydney were starting to crawl out of the vehicle and as Sydney was being pulled out of the wreck, she said “we’re still goin’ fishing, aren’t we?” They had been hit by an oncoming semi-truck trailer. John describes it as nothing short of a miracle. How is this paragraph: In the ensuing chaos and panic, they reached out to their friends already at Loon Lake, and without hesitation, Jim and Bob drove to Cache Creek to meet them. Nancy and Camille, two kind-hearted strangers not only assisted in transferring their camping gear but also provided emotional support during this challenging time. Steven and Sydney were transported to the nearest hospital by ambulance. Jim and Bob, along with Nancy and Camille, helped transport all their items to Loon Lake, allowing John and Sandra to go and pick up Steven and Sydney from Lillooet Hospital where they were being examined and treated for their cuts and wounds. As they recount this harrowing incident, they remain forever grateful for the small acts of kindness that loomed large and carried them through. And they laugh as they share the ending of their story. They did end up going to Loon Lake to go fishing. And Sydney brags triumphantly that she caught the largest trout that day - a metaphor for resilience and hope; and a reminder that even amidst adversity, miracles are possible, and there is inherent goodness in the world. ©2024 What's On!
