Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Dunsmuir Urban Community Garden

10/22/2024

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Dunsmuir Urban Community Garden (DUC Garden) on October 26th, 2024, from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. This event marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Dunsmuir Neighborhood, as the community comes together to celebrate the launch of this innovative urban agricultural initiative.

The city has given the green light to the Dunsmuir Neighbourhood Association (DNA), a local nonprofit, to transform the vacant lot between 33525 and 33543 Ninth Avenue into a vibrant urban community garden and meeting place.

The DNA is always seeking to follow the Mission Health and Wellness Strategy dedicated to advocating for causes such as food security, hidden poverty and community building, as well preservation of the wetlands in their neighbourhood.

The changes on Ninth Avenue will create an energetic community space where residents can socialize, grow crops, and become more self-sufficient. The Dunsmuir Urban Community Garden (DUC Garden) will be run by a core team of experts and volunteers and include collaboration between residents and organizations across Mission, Hatzic, Durieu, Miracle Valley, Deroche, and Dewdney.

A huge thank you goes to The City of Mission, Envision Financial, First West Foundation, Mission Community Skills Center, Rona Fraser Valley Building Supplies, Arnold’s Equipment Rentals, Taylor, Tait, Ruley & Company, Tim Horton Junction, Mission City Pizza and Ecole Des Deux-Rives for contributing towards this project which is aimed at nurturing community spirit and strengthening food security in Mission.

Join us on Ninth Avenue on Saturday, October 26th, 1 - 3 pm,  for a day filled with excitement! Experience the grand ribbon cutting ceremony with local dignitaries and the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, the unveiling of our very first Little Free Library, and indulge in delicious vegan pumpkin soup, rolls and caramel apples - all for free! Don't miss out on the fun children's pumpkin event, face painting and the chance to spend time with goats. See you there!

Julian Taylor delivered a powerful performance at Clarke Theatre last night, blending roots-oriented folk and soul in a beautifully intimate setting. The audience was drawn in, feeling truly immersed in the music as he shared stories and songs that connected us through his experiences. The Mission Community Foundation is pleased to announce that we will disburse $275,000 through a new, one-time grant stream called the Mission & Region Prosperity Fund to enable a community-informed distribution of funds.

The origin of these funds is the Community Prosperity Fund, a $25 million investment from the Government of British Columbia that advances poverty reduction and social inclusion—announced on the inaugural B.C. Non-profit Day. This fund is part of the Government of B.C.’s commitment to supporting the non-profit sector and empowering local communities to make local decisions.

The fund is directed towards organizations that plan to produce initiatives related to poverty reduction and social inclusion.

What makes this fund different?
Funding can support operational expenses or project delivery.
  • Operational expenses that contribute to your organization’s long-term resiliency
  • (e.g., investment in digital infrastructure, support for staff training, developing organizational strategies and policies, salaries, rent, and other organizational costs) OR
  • Project delivery funding that addresses community needs relating to poverty and/or social inclusion.
  • If your project is happening in the City of Mission or the Fraser Valley Regional District (Hatzic Prairie, McConnell Creek, Durieu, Dewdney, Deroche, and Lake Errock) you could be eligible.

Less restrictive time constraints.
The Mission & Region Prosperity Fund gives you the space to complete your best work. You have up to three years for your activities, giving you time to implement the funding in a way that works best for your organization.

Applications are now open for the Mission & Region Prosperity Fund, please visit www.missioncommunityfoundation.orgfor more information. The deadline to apply is November 15, 2024.
